Francoise MBANGO ETONE is Cameroon's most successful Olympian. She became her country's first Olympic champion in an individual event when she won gold in the triple jump at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.


She retained her title at the Beijing 2008 Games. Cameroon first appeared at the Olympic Games in 1964.


Sprinter David NJITOCK took part in the men's 100m and 200m. He was the only member of the team.


Boxer Joseph BESSALA claimed the country's first Olympic medal, a silver in the men's welterweight division at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games.


At the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Cameroon's footballers won the nation's first Olympic gold medal when they beat Spain 5-3 on penalties in the men's final.


A public holiday was declared to celebrate the victory by the team, known as the Indomitable Lions.
