Ghana first competed at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games under the name Gold Coast. A seven-man team took part in the athletics but to date, all Ghana's individual Olympic medals have come in boxing.


Ike QUARTEY was their first Olympic medallist. He took silver in the light-welterweight at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games.


Lightweight Eddie BLAY claimed a bronze medal at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games and Prince AMARTEY also took bronze in the middleweight division at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games. Ghana were the first African team to win an Olympic medal in football. They reached the semifinals at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games where they lost to the host nation Spain. They beat Australia in the play-off for bronze.


Ghana sent a team of nine to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to compete in boxing and athletics. Their team included light-heavyweight Bastie SAMIR and his brother Issah in the bantamweight division.


Sprinter Abdul Aziz ZAKARI competed at his fourth successive Olympic Games in Beijing. He had reached the 100m final at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.
