Guatemala were first represented at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games by a team of 21. Graviola EWING was the only female member of the team. She competed in the 100m and 200m.
Doroteo FLORES finished 22nd in the men's marathon. Shooter Francisco SANDOVAL placed ninth in the men's free pistol. They did not appear at the Games again until 1968. In men's football, they beat Czechoslovakia and Thailand to qualify for the quarterfinals, where they lost 1-0 to eventual champions Hungary.
Cyclist Saturnino RUSTRIAN placed 22nd in the men's road race. Guatemalans have performed well in shooting.
Edgardo ZACHRISSON finished sixth in the skeet competition at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, and Arturo IGLESIAS competed in three successive Olympic Games from 1976 to 1984. He finished 15th in the running target at the 1980 Games and Sergio SANCHEZ was eighth in the free pistol in 1996. He had previously competed in modern pentathlon.
Rider Oswaldo MENDES came closest to a medal at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. He finished fourth in the individual showjumping and boxer Carlos MOTTA TARACENA was fifth in light flyweight at the Los Angeles 1984 Games.
Heidy SUAREZ achieved the best performance by a Guatemalan woman. She lost in the semifinal of the welterweight taekwondo at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and placed fourth.
Luis GARCIA was 22nd in the men's 50km walk in Beijing in 2008. Guatemala have yet to win a medal. They have never staged the Olympic Games but did host the IOC session in 2007.
