Iraq first competed the last time the Olympic Games were held in London, in 1948.
Their 11-man team comprised their basketball players and 400m runner L. HASSO. One player, Ali SALMAN played in the basketball tournament and also competed in the men's 100m and 200m.
Iraq's only medal to date came at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games when weightlifter Abdul Wahid AZIZ took bronze in the light heavyweight.
The closest Iraq have been to a medal since then was in football. At the Athens 2004 Olympic Games Iraq reached the semifinals of the men's tournament. They lost 3-1 to Paraguay and were beaten by Italy in the bronze medal play-off.
Maysa Hussain MATROOD was the first woman to represent Iraq when she competed in the 5,000m at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
At the Beijing 2008 Games, Iraq sent a team of two rowers and two athletes.
