His son Yves represented France in the shot put at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Mali sent their largest team to the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
The Mali football team qualified for the men's tournament. They drew with Mexico and the Republic of Korea and beat host nation Greece to qualify for the quarterfinals as group leaders.
They lost in the quarterfinals to Italy by a single goal. Mali ‘s women's basketball team qualified for the Beijing 2008 tournament as African champions after springing a shock to win the continental title.
Their Olympic Games competitors in 2008 also included 100m women's freestyle swimmer Mariam KEITA and sprinter Kadiatou CAMARA. Both women competed in their third successive Olympic Games.
Mali have yet to win a medal at the Games.
