Мозамбик / Mozambique

Mozambique were first represented at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games by a team of 14, their largest to date.

Swimmer Pedro CRUZ became their first Olympian when he competed in the men's 100m backstroke.

Middle-distance runner Maria MUTOLA has earned both Mozambique's Olympic medals to date. She received an Olympic solidarity grant that enabled her to train in the USA. She competed in the heats of the 800m at the Seoul 1988 Games as a 15-year-old and reached the 800m final at Barcelona 1992.

At Atlanta 1996, MUTOLA took 800m bronze, her country's first Olympic medal, and in 2000, she became her country's first Olympic champion.

She made the final again in Athens in 2004, finishing fourth, and competed in her fifth Olympic Games at Beijing 2008 at the age of 35.

Mozambique also sent two swimmers and a judoka to the Beijing 2008 Games.
