Nauru made their first appearance at the Atlanta 1996 Centennial Olympic Games where they were represented by a team of three. To date they have competed only in weightlifting.
Weightlifter Marcus STEPHEN finished 11th in the featherweight competition at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. He had previously represented Samoa at the 1992 Games in Barcelona and switched to the land of his birth when they were granted Olympic recognition in time for the 1996 Games.
He became an MP, then president of Nauru. In 2000 Sheeva PEO became the first woman to compete in an Olympic Games for Nauru. Yukio PETER's eighth place in the men's lightweight competition at the Athens 2004 Games remains Nauru's best performance to date.
Weightlifter Itte DETENAMO was their only representative at the 2008 Games in Beijing. He finished 10th in the super-heavyweight division. They have yet to win a medal.
