Uganda first sent a team of three athletes to the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games. All took part in athletics.
They first included women in their team in 1964. Mary MUSANI went in the 80m hurdles and Irene MUYANGA took part in the 100m and 200m.
John AKAII-BUA is the nation's only Olympic champion. He set a world record winning the 400m hurdles at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games but most of Uganda's medals have come in boxing.
Their first medal came at the Mexico City 1968 Olympic Games when boxer Leo RWABWOGO grabbed flyweight bronze.
He reached the final in Munich in 1972 but was beaten by Bulgaria's Georgi KOSTADINOV. He remains the only Ugandan to claim more than one Olympic medal.
John MUGABE took silver in welterweights at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games before going on to a professional career.
Davis KAMOGA claimed the men's 400m bronze at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Uganda were represented by a team of 11 in four sports.
